Roof work under the Gidea Park direction

Havering’s Gidea Park notice (Art4/4/2015) lists other alterations to the roof of a dwellinghouse, which are Class C development, among the rights removed. At level 1 addresses that applies to the front and sides of the house, and at level 2 addresses to the front, sides and rear (Havering Gidea Park notice).

Rooflights, which a loft conversion often relies on, fall under that heading. For example, a rooflight on the rear slope of a level 2 house in Gidea Park needs an application, while the same rooflight at a level 1 address does not. Dormers come under Class B, which the notice does not list, so the conservation area rules and Class B’s own limits decide.

What Havering’s checklist asks for a roof

Havering’s validation checklist asks for roof plans at a minimum scale of 1:50 or 1:100, with a north direction and an accurate scale bar, and for sections and elevations annotated with site levels, finished floor levels and roof heights. A heritage statement is needed in a conservation area (Havering checklist).

Havering has 11 conservation areas (Havering conservation areas). It decided 558 of 571 householder applications inside 8 weeks in the year to June 2026.

Havering loft questions

Can I fit rooflights in Gidea Park?

Depends on your address and the slope. Level 1 addresses are controlled at the front and sides, level 2 on every side.

Is a dormer covered by the Gidea Park direction?

The notice does not list Class B. Conservation area rules and the Class B limits still apply, so we check.

What roof plan scale does Havering want?

A minimum of 1:50 or 1:100, with a north point and scale bar.

How fast does Havering decide?

It decided 558 of 571 householder cases within 8 weeks last year. We cannot promise a date.
