In the Islington loft fee

Roof policies by schedule: Highbury Fields
Highbury Fields’ guidelines say the council may permit traditional roof extensions or dormers on properties in one schedule, existing mansards must stay unaltered on another, new or altered dormers are not permitted on front or side slopes of a third, and no roof extensions or dormers are permitted on a fourth. Where traditional mansards are permitted, the rear should be mansarded rather than vertical brickwork, to keep the original butterfly or other profile (Highbury Fields guidelines).
Consent will not be given to remove chimney stacks or pots visible from the street. For example, a house on a scheduled terrace may be allowed a mansard, while its neighbour on another schedule is not, even though the buildings look alike.
Article 4 across Islington
Islington says it has removed permitted development in 40 of its 42 conservation areas, so a loft there cannot be assumed to be permitted (Islington permitted development). Class B can apply on a house outside them, within its volume limits.
Islington decided 142 of 146 householder applications inside 8 weeks in the year to June 2026. Other areas have different guidance documents, and we read the one for your street before we draw, so the pack passes validation without a query.
