Shrewsbury Park Estate: the strictest case

Greenwich names eight Article 4 areas: Ashburnham Triangle, East Greenwich, Greenwich Town Centre, Trenchard Street, Progress Estate, Rectory Field, Shrewsbury Park Estate and West Greenwich (Greenwich Article 4 areas). Each has its own guidance note.

On the Laing Estate part of Shrewsbury Park, the note says extensions of any size to the front, side or rear need planning permission, only where height, scale, bulk, design and materials are appropriate, in all cases with a tiled hipped roof. Rear extensions should not enclose or lose the original rear bay, and two-storey extensions are not considered appropriate (Shrewsbury Park note). For example, a single-storey kitchen extension on a Mereworth Drive house would need to leave the original bay visible.

What Greenwich’s validation list asks for

Greenwich’s householder row asks for the form, fee, photographs of the site and its surroundings, a heritage impact assessment in a conservation area, and a set of drawings: location and block plans, then elevations, floor and roof plans and sections, before and after. Plans are at 1:50 or 1:100, a 5 m scale bar is acceptable, and existing and proposed can share one drawing (Greenwich validation list).

Greenwich decided 469 of 495 householder applications inside 8 weeks in the year to June 2026.
