Which Newham streets have Article 4 limits

Newham has nine conservation areas (Newham conservation areas). Its Article 4 page lists three where directions apply, Durham Road, Romford Road and Woodgrange Road, and says extensions, dormer windows, new hard surfaces and replacement windows may need permission there (Newham Article 4).

Elsewhere, Class A still applies, with its own limits. For example, a rear extension on a terrace in Plaistow stands outside all three, while one on a Durham Road house in Manor Park starts as an application.

What Newham asks you to send

Newham’s validation requirements document sets floor plans and elevations at 1:50 or 1:100, roof plans at 1:100 where the roof alters, and sections and site levels at 1:50 or 1:100. For a small householder scheme with no change in floor levels, it says sections may not be necessary (Newham requirements).

Its extension guidance asks for site photographs too: for a rear extension, one from the end of the garden looking back at the house and one from the back door looking out (Newham SPD). Newham gives householders written pre-application advice free of charge, which we use when a design is close to the line. Newham decided 227 of 238 householder applications inside 8 weeks in the year to June 2026.
