Your Wandsworth drawings
- A measured survey of the back of the house, the side return and the neighbours’ windows
- Plans, elevations and a section with a scale bar on every sheet
- The CIL form, which Wandsworth treats as compulsory for every householder application
- A check of the house against the eight conservation areas Wandsworth lists with Article 4 directions
- Submission and replies to the case officer, with free redraws until approval
| Our drawings and submission paid to us | £439 |
|---|---|
| Measured survey paid to us | £150 |
| Council householder fee paid to the council | £548 |
| Total | £1,137 |
We charge £589 in total. The £548 is paid to the council when the application goes in, and the survey is charged once if you later order building regulations drawings for the same house.
Wandsworth’s invalid-application traps
Wandsworth lists its common reasons for invalid applications, and two apply to every extension: no CIL form, which is compulsory for householder applications whether or not floor space is created, and no scale bar on the drawings (Wandsworth process). If the council finds a problem it emails, and you have two months to respond before the application is withdrawn.
The council’s local requirements add a daylight and sunlight assessment where a scheme may affect light to adjoining homes or gardens, prepared to the BRE guide (Wandsworth local requirements). For an ordinary single-storey kitchen extension that is rarely needed; for a deep two-storey one between terraces it can be.
Estates with extra controls
Wandsworth names the conservation areas where Article 4 directions apply: Dover House Estate, Heaver Estate, Latchmere Estate, Putney Lower Common, Roehampton Village, Shaftesbury Park Estate, Totterdown Fields Estate and Wandsworth Common (Wandsworth Article 4). The council warns that some directions cover only parts of an area or only certain works, so the wording for your street matters.
Take Shaftesbury Park Estate, for example: its cottages are a conservation area, so a rear extension of more than one storey is outside Class A anyway, and the direction adds control over external changes. In those areas, Wandsworth expects a heritage statement written by a specialist historic environment consultant.
Timing and the levy
Wandsworth’s target is 8 weeks for householder and small-scale applications. In the year to June 2026 it decided 597 of 657 householder applications in that time.
Outside Nine Elms and Roehampton, Wandsworth’s CIL on residential space is £250 per square metre before indexation, £427.13 indexed for 2024 (Wandsworth CIL). An extension adding under 100 m² pays none, under regulation 42, which is why the form is a formality rather than a bill.

Wandsworth rear extension questions
Why does Wandsworth need a CIL form for a small extension?
The council treats it as compulsory for every householder application, even when no floor space is added. Leaving it out is one of its listed reasons for an invalid application. We complete it for you.
Is my Wandsworth street under an Article 4 direction?
Eight conservation areas are, from Dover House Estate to Wandsworth Common, and some directions cover only part of an area. We check your address before quoting.
Will I need a daylight study?
Only where an extension may affect light to neighbouring homes or gardens enough to need one. Most single-storey extensions do not; we tell you if yours might.
How long does Wandsworth take?
Its target is 8 weeks for householder applications, and it met that for most in the year to June 2026. We cannot promise a date.
